The Fossil Fuel Symposium will mark the closing of ATHICA's 30th exhibit, Running on Empty: the fossil fuel addiction, which has been one of the most successful in ATHICA’s seven-year history.
“The interest in this show has been wonderful. We’ve set new attendance records for our opening and general hours,” ATHICA director Lizzie Zucker Saltz said. “The symposium will be an opportunity for the community to learn more from experts about the environmental challenges posed by fossil fuels and what we can do to respond.” She also noted that "Thanks to the generosity of the guys at Ashford Manor and the artists themselves, audiences will be able to meet some of the out-of-town artists in person, such as painter Morgan Craig, for instance, whose work has created quiet a stir."
The symposium will open with a presentation by University of Georgia paleontology professor (and former ATHICA Board member) Sally E. Walker, who recently returned from an Antarctic expedition studying climate change in relation to the fossil record."
“Planet Earth's history has bounced between polar opposites—hot-house and ice-house climates,” Walker said. “During hot-house climates, excess plant material was stored in the rock record as coal (a fossil fuel), eventually cooling the planet. Humans now rapidly burn fossil fuels, rapidly warming the planet from mild, cooler conditions: will we, and the rest of Earth's life, survive this global warming?”
A panel discussion titled “The Inspiration of Empty” will include Running on Empty artists, who will speak about the intersection of artwork and activism and how environmental issues serve as motivation in their lives.
Works by selected artists will be available in a silent auction that will help support the non-profit gallery and the artists' expenses, beginning Thursday, March 26th at 6:00 p.m. and ending the Sunday of the symposium at 6:00 p.m.
A “Green Your Home” panel discussion moderated by Athens-Clarke County Environmental Coordinator Dick Field will focus on ways that Athens homeowners can reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with home energy use.
Participants will include renewable energy installers OneWorld Sustainable; green builder Tony Purcell; Full Circle Real Estate Group founder Patrick O'Brien; and a home energy audit specialist, Todd Elihu.
Other presentations will be given by Athens-based Solar Power Partners—makers of a unique solar hot water heater—and JC Corcoran, an M.D., and advocate of reducing carbon emissions through plant-based diets. JC has been leading programs on plant-based nutrition and the environmental impact of our food choices in and around Athens for many years and publishes one of the nation’s most popular vegan lifestyle e-newsletters, News For Life.
“It’s obvious to me that much of the Athens community is already motivated to reduce their fossil fuels usage,” Running on Empty curator Bart King said. “The Closing Day symposium aims to provide the practical information needed to translate motivation into action.
