Unraveled: Roustabout: An Exhibit by the Fiber Arts Collective
Curator: Caitlin Martell

Stephanie Anderson's newest work is a shift from the politically minded screenprints viewers may be familiar with. For instance, Calling the Flock, is comprised of massive felt blankets wrapped around body-like forms which raise primal questions about our need for warmth and nurturance. Meredith Re' Grimsley, an adjunct professor of art at the University of Georgia, bridges fiber arts and book arts in her work through the layering of cloth and text, evoking a sense of spirituality that speaks to a human collective consciousness. With her experienced command of technique and materials, Grimsley has served as an unnamed artistic leader within the group itself, providing an artistic dynamism that acts as a catalyst for members of this group and beyond. If Grimsley is the group's master, then Caitlin Martell is the group's facilitator (she is the organizer of this exhibition, having proposed it to ATHICA.) The Unraveled Collective?s support system allowed her to find the to courage dabble in a liberated and playful fashion with fiber arts (her formal training is in printmaking.) Working with hot colors, she creates inventive objects viewers can touch and performers can wear, using synthetic and consumer materials like plastic sandwich bags and bright pink household insulation foam in surprising and illogical ways. Her seemingly lighthearted explorations are a way for the artist to confront the seemingly weighty diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Rather than focus on the condition's rapture and despair, she explores its mania: her time-intensive, obsessive processes are expressive of its excessive peaks of joy and elation. Her work at ATHICA will respond in a site-specific manner to the space itself. Whereas Martell uses non-traditional materials, Amanda Gary's similarly obsessive work is marked by her use of thread, the most basic, familiar element of fiber art. Her series, titled Visionaries, is a magical collection of dolls, each of which personify individual members of Unraveled. Their surfaces are created via a fascinating process -- Gary uses a sewing machine to embroider thread patterns onto a starch bag, which she then dissolves in water, leaving the drawing-like scribbles behind, which she then uses to wrap the dolls. Gary officially joined the group this fall after returning to Athens from an assistantship at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Craft in Gatlinburg, TN as well as studies at The Art Institute of Chicago. For this show, Theresa Sporer is incorporating fiber into a more sculptural vocabulary of metal, ceramics and found materials, creating very potent, emotionally intense pieces rife with latent meaning. Finally, the self-taught fashion designer, Daniel Davis, will contribute more conventional fiber arts, with his series of clothes and fashion illustrations, available here in digital format. By only designing for men, he directly flouts traditional fashion mores. Intriguingly anti-production, his designs are customized to each individual he chooses to portray in fabric. Through this body of work, Davis addresses alternative male lifestyles. By granting the Unraveled Collective space, ATHICA acknowledges and celebrates the importance of collectives in the history of art, and the role of community in supporting sustained creation. This collective is one of many fiercely committed pockets of creativity flourishing within the Athens art scene, Canopy Studios is another.
