Join ATHICA and Citizen Advocacy Athens-Clarke (CAAC) for an evening of poetry, storytelling, and song. In keeping with the theme of the current exhibition, Center, the evening features work addressing the idea of community: Paul Dorsey, an advocate with CAAC, Alan Flurry, writer and producer for the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia, reading from his recently published book, Canesville; Janet Geddis, owner of Avid Bookshop, reciting poems with a community spirit; Beth Thrasher, co-owner of Thrasher Photo and Design, narrating an original short story; Marc Tissenbaum, a local organic gardner who grew up in West Virginia, where storytelling was a part of the Appalachian culture practiced by his grandfather and other elders, telling a uniquely Athens story; Deirdre Sugiuchi, co-curator of the New Town Revue, presenting a new piece exploring the phenomenon of large groups of people moving to Athens from the same town; and Dave Marr, former front man of the Star Room Boys, playing the tunes for which he’s known and loved.
