General Submission Policy
Once a year ATHICA invites proposals from curators,
collectives & artists with challenging, progressive or innovative
focused projects or cohesive bodies of work. Only those who have developed along these lines should take their time submitting. (The specifics of that
Call will be to the right when the deadline is imminent.) We ask that
general submissions not be sent at other times of the year. Curators should be aware that we generally
look for focused themes that are timely and not media specific. Groups of artists whose work have little in common, other than being friends who think it would be fun to show together are discouraged from submitting. We never charge fees for submitting works to this or any other Calls.
We do offer curators small stipends for their efforts and are able to support artists for travel and other needs, which are decided upon on a case-by-case basis. Throughout the year we issue Calls for Entries on specific themes that emerge from our mid-summer Exhibition Committee review. These also appear to the right when current. In summer 2007 we started a new program for emerging artists called ATHICA Emerges, which provides a showcase for local area artists during summertime. This program is curated, but it is markedly different than our main season offerings in that it focuses on artists who can install and care for their work. But for it we still seek Mission-appropriate projects we deem challenging, progressive or innovative. (We also offer a 4Lease program with none of these parameters.) Deadlines vary from year to year, but will be posted to the right when active. For all submissions note that we are able to accommodate large-scale sculpture and/or installation (Please see Our Space for images and a downloadable floorplan). Please read our Mission Statement and visit Past Exhibitions pages to get a more specific sense of our criteria for inclusion. We prefer that you submit questions via email to exhibitions[at]athica.org We are a non-profit organization, which opened in March 2002. We have a relatively small budget, and a mostly volunteer staff, but fortunately often receive great press, have large openings (305 is a recent record), and receptive audiences, with an average of 600 - 800 or more visitors attending each exhibition. We have exhibited more than 600 artists since opening in March 2002, 2/3rds reside outside the southeast region of the US, and a small number have hailed from Canada, Europe and South America. There are no fees, no sales, no prospectus. We occasionally provide travel stipends or shipping assistance for large images, sculpture or installation projects, and free or subsidized lodgings during artist installation visits. We generally mount four exhibitions a season which run from August/September through June/July, including a summer show of local emerging artists. We match curators with projects that are chosen during our annual Exhibition Committee Selection meeting, typically locally-based individuals with expertise in a particular subject area and an interest in experiencing the curatorial process or expanding their curatorial range. Artists' submissions may be retained for a number of years until an appropriate project arises. We are located in a vibrant college and music town. See our CVB for more on Athens, GA. |
